Facts about fear of speaking in public


Everyone wants to be a good public speaker, but feels hesitation. So, to remove our hesitation we should be aware about some facts related to this public speaking fear which will help us to reduce this hesitation.
  • You are not the only one who has this fear of public speaking-
Understand that you are not the only person who feels fear or shy while speaking at any public meeting or presentation or any conference. There are many person who face this fear.
To overcome this fear one should treat the audience as if they also afraid of public speaking and they are here only to listen you because you are a good speaker.
  • Certain amount of this fear helps in performing well-
A little pressure or fear of something is useful to perform well. Your fear while approaching to the stage or in speaking publicly works like an indicator which indicates that your body is getting ready to go into action. This acts like psychological and physiological preparation which makes us to think faster, to talk more fluently and to speak with more intensity in comparison to the normal circumstances.
So, expect a certain amount of fear as a natural adjunct of desire to speak in public.
  • Even many professional speakers never loss all stage fear completely-
If you ask to any professional speaker about the public speaking fear, he/she can't say that they never feel this fear. Its always present just before they speak, and it may be exist through the whole talk. They treat this fear as a price which they pay for being the race horse. So they take it profitably to feel a sense of fear of a limited amount.
  • You feel fear b'coz you are unaccustomed to speak in public-
The main cause of this fear is that people takes it as a complex job even more complicated than playing chess or learning to drive. For them it is an unknown quantity which makes them feel anxiety and fear.

So to make this fearful situation simple and easy just do one and only one thing, that is : Practice, Practice and Practice.
If this stage fear gets out of hand and effects your effectiveness by causing lack of fluency, mind blockage, uncontrollable tics, muscular spasm and any faintness felling, don't fell despair. These symptoms are not unusual. Make efforts and the degree of this stage fear will soon reduce to the point where it will prove a help not a hindrance.
